Malta Dynamics, EZG Manufacturing Build Custom XSERIES for National September 11 Memorial and Museum

January 29, 2019 – Malta Dynamics and EZG Manufacturing partnered with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to build a custom XSERIES Mobile Fall Protection System to make it easier and safer for the engineers to maintain the Memorial.

The twin reflecting pools, located where the Twin Towers once stood, feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. Each pool stretches nearly an acre in size. Every person’s name who died in the 1993 and 2001 attacks is inscribed into bronze panels that outline these pools.

“The 9/11 Memorial’s pools sit within the original footprints of the Twin Towers and play an essential role in remembering the 2,983 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993,” Joseph L. Flannigan, Director of Engineering at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. “As millions visit these 1-acre pools with 30-foot waterfalls in the heart of lower Manhattan, Malta Dynamics helps us ensure safety and efficiency as we care for this sacred place.”

OSHA requires anyone working at or above four feet use overhead fall protection. The XSERIES Mobile Fall Protection System allows maintenance crews to work in spaces they would not normally be able to access with standard anchor points, such as in the pools at the Memorial.

“Their plans are to really utilize the XSERIES for maintenance throughout the entire facility. They have several areas where employees work at height and this really provides them a way of doing that safely,” Malta Dynamics Operations Manager Chris Holland said.

The XSERIES from Malta Dynamics will be used to clean the Memorial Pool waterfall weirs, plaza-level troughs and pavilion entrance glass canopy. The maintenance team also plans to use the XSERIES to remove coins stuck between stones in the pool, maintain the waterfall weir heat trace system and replace the plaza light pole fixtures and bulbs.

The XSERIES will also be used for workers to tie off on while they clean the Museum’s wall windows, ensuring the staff’s safety while navigating the Tridents, the two 80-foot tall steel columns that once formed part of the exterior façade of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

“We’re so happy and proud that the engineers and the facility staff selected the XSERIES Grabber to work with their people to help keep them safe,” Malta Dynamics CEO Damian Lang said. “It’s my commitment and our company’s commitment to making sure our equipment is in good working condition and does a fantastic job for them on a daily basis.”

Malta Dynamics Sales Manager Michele Tipton worked with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum staff and Malta Dynamics’ sister company, EZG Manufacturing, to create the custom XSERIES unit.

“Our XSERIES Grabber unit right now is a hi-vis orange. Because of the nature of the site, the hi-vis orange is something that is not used within a mile or so perimeter of the museum,” Tipton said. “So Malta Dynamics and EZG Manufacturing and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum all worked together and ended up doing a gray color on the unit along with the blue that is the same blue in the skylights that actually stand there today.”

Lang, Holland, Mobile Fall Protection Sales Representative Greg Brown and EZG Manufacturing Sales Representative Steve Wheeler presented the memorial staff with the custom XSERIES Mobile Fall Protection System on Dec. 6, 2018 in New York City.

“I got to meet some of the engineers who were actually there to help clean up, just a week or so after the attack,” Brown said. “I remember everything about that day and that morning, and to speak to the people that were actually in the city, it was really moving. It was really nice to meet those guys and to shake the hands of those that helped make that place what it is today.”

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum remembers and honors the 2,983 people killed in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, as well as those who risked their lives to save others and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath of the attacks.

“Having visited the Memorial a couple times myself, every time I visit there I still find the Memorial, to this day, humbling. You’re on hallowed ground the second you step onto that plaza and it’s something to behold to realize what happened on that fateful day and the strides that people have made,” Holland said. “It’s a really proud moment for us to be able to offer even some small part of the equipment that is used to further their mission.”
