STUDSON Flash Face Shield Achieves Arc Thermal Performance Value
Testing validates STUDSON’s arc flash assembly for front-facing arc thermal protection
North American safety helmet innovator STUDSON has announced that its Arc Flash Face Shield, purpose-built in collaboration with Paulson for the Type II SHK-1 Class E Full Brim safety helmet, achieved an Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) of 20 cal/cm² when tested to ASTM F2178/F2178M-23a. The shield was evaluated under conditions replicating real-world arc flash hazards and demonstrated robust performance, with no ignition, no after flame, and no melting or dripping during testing.
The STUDSON Arc Flash Face Shield is designed for integration with the STUDSON SHK1 safety helmet and features a LeverLock™ Attachment System, which connects the shield to the bracket to simplify shield replacement. With its proven high-level performance, it is an essential protective solution for electrical workers facing arc flash risks.
The test was completed in August by an independent third-party organization, Kinectrics Inc., at its testing facility in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Kinectrics is accredited by the International Accreditation Service (IAS) to conform to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 to conduct the ASTM F2178/F2178M-23a.
Important Safety Note: The ASTM F2178 standard evaluates front-facing arc thermal protection only. Testing does not cover side/back exposure, projectiles, molten metal, pressure, noise, or electrical shock. The Arc Rating applies only when the shield is used as part of a complete arc-rated PPE system.
