Ergodyne Announces Partnership with Polartec® with Launch of New Flame-Resistant Dual Compliant Balaclava
Ergodyne announced the launch of their new flame-resistant (FR) balaclava, the latest addition to their N-Ferno® line of cold-weather gear. Built in collaboration with Polartec®, the new N-Ferno® 6847 Dual Compliant FR Balaclava Face Mask meets two flame-resistant standards, both NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112, and is one of the only balaclavas in the industry that is 100% compliant with both specs – not just partially constructed with compliant materials. It’s rated to protect against both arc flash and flash fire, making it an excellent choice for those working in electrical, utilities, oil and gas, petrochemical and other similar industries.
The N-Ferno® 6847 Dual Compliant Balaclava is designed with Polartec® FR Power Grid™ FR fleece, a revolutionary fabric that maximizes warmth without bulk. The Power Grid™ technical fleece is “the evolution of fleece fabric engineering,” according to Polartec®. The patented grid construction knit uses a geometric pattern across the fabric, which improves fit, wicking abilities and maximizes performance, while using less fabric. The fabric next to the skin is hydrophilic to absorb moisture and transfer it outside, where the outer surface disperses it for more effective evaporation. The grid design also creates open air channels that improve breathability with less fabric mass. The result is a supremely breathable, moisture-wicking, lightweight balaclava that still offers real protection against both arc flash and flash fire.
Arc flash is a dangerous release of energy created by an electrical fault, and is generally only a fraction of a second in duration but can reach temperatures over 35,000℉ (4x hotter than the surface of the sun). A flash fire is characterized by a sudden and intense fire with extremely high heat, short duration and a rapidly moving flame. In order to meet NFPA 70E and 2112, this balaclava has been tested and certified to self-extinguish after the flame in 2 seconds or less, and must not ignite, melt or drip.
“Our new Dual Compliant Balaclava has an ARC rating of CAT 2; 20 cal/cm2 ATPV, which makes it one of the highest ARC rated fabrics we sell. Not to mention, it’s one of the only balaclavas on the market that is 100% compliant to both specs,” says Alsie Nelson, Senior Product Manager, Ergodyne. “Plus, it uses the Polartec® Power Grid™ FR fleece in both black and navy, so it’s going to be supremely warm, comfortable and protective for workers out in the cold this winter.”
