Construction Safety

CARNIE CAP, INC.’S REBAR CAP SYSTEM PREVENTS IMPALEMENT ON JOBSITES. BY ALAN DORICH

Now more than ever, construction sites are keeping a close eye on safety, particularly when it comes to falls. “The most frequent injuries and fatalities in construction are falls from a height,” Wendy Hunt says. “When they fall from a height on a big project, they’re likely to land on something sharp.”

One object they are likely to fall on is concrete reinforcement bars, but that is where Carnie Cap, Inc. can help. Hunt serves as the manager for the Moline, IL-based company, which provides systems that prevent impalement on rebar.

She explains that Michael Carnicle, a site safety auditor, developed the system when he received complaints on a job site that standard rebar caps were falling off and in some instances, impalement was still occurring. “They didn’t feel they were safe enough,” Hunt says.

After collecting input, he thought of an idea to place 2-inch by 4-inch beams in two squared U-shaped brackets that were supported by a tube that slipped over and encased the rebar. A larger model was created for larger diameters of rebar. Carnicle created a working model and got a patent, but took nine months of testing before releasing it to the market. Carnicle sold the product to the current owners in 2004.

LIFT Safety is a premium industrial products brand that has been redefining safety products and personal protective equipment for over 20 years. Incorporating innovation, performance, function, quality, style, and, above all, protection has been the goal behind our industry leading carbon fiber hard hats, pro series gloves, and every other product we’ve designed.

Our roots in protection run deep; EVS Sports, our sister company, designed and created the first ever motocross specific knee brace over 35 years ago. Over time, EVS Sports became the protection leader in the motocross industry with a full line of gear all designed to keep people safe while they do what they love. The founders and staff of EVS chose to carry over the same ideology of ‘protection above all else’ and venture into the world of personal protective equipment with LIFT Safety in 2004. The same amount of work and dedication that went into creating and building EVS Sports into an action sports protection leader now also goes into everything LIFT Safety does day in and day out. This mindset has helped LIFT Safety become a staple in the industrial safety and personal protective equipment industries.

Protection continues to be the focal point in everything we do, and as LIFT Safety has grown, so have our ambitions. LIFT Aviation, another sister company, began in 2016 that set out to redefine safety equipment and accessories in the general aviation industry. The industry leading technology and innovation that go into LIFT Safety products also go into LIFT Aviation and has helped the LIFT Aviation earn the honor of developing the next generation flight helmet for the U.S. Air Force.

Our team is busy and we have a strong presence in multiple industries with multiple brands, but one thing remains true; protection is at the root of everything we do.

2024 Construction Safety eBook - PIP Commentary – Hydration & Heat Stress Solutions

PIP® excels as a champion in the construction industry by offering a comprehensive range of PPE solutions, including hand, head, hearing, eye, respiratory, and heat stress protection, that caters to every need in the construction industry, ensuring safety from head-to-toe. However, as the summer months are quickly approaching, we recognize that in high temperature environments, hydration and heat stress management are critical.

Dehydration is a major contributor to heat stress in the construction industry, with over 70% of workers beginning their workday in a dehydrated state. Even mild dehydration, which can be classified as 1-4% dehydration, adversely affects worker productivity, safety, and morale. It is estimated that over half of American workers suffer from mild dehydration on a daily basis and only replace half of the fluid they lose through sweat due to lack of knowledge about proper hydration strategies.
